An enclosed trailer removes the two things that worry owners of valuable cars: weather and road debris. No rain, no salt spray, no gravel thrown up by the truck ahead, and no eyes on the vehicle at every fuel stop.
The equipment differs too. Enclosed carriers typically run hydraulic lift gates or very low-angle ramps, so a car with two inches of clearance loads without touching a splitter. Drivers use soft nylon straps over the tyres rather than chains on the chassis. Loads are smaller, usually two to seven vehicles, which means fewer stops and less handling between pickup and delivery.
You are also buying a different driver pool. Enclosed work attracts operators who move six-figure cars for a living and behave accordingly.

Which cars genuinely need enclosed transport
Enclosed is worth the premium in four situations. Cars with under four inches of ground clearance, because standard ramps become a real risk. Vehicles with fresh or original paint that cannot be casually resprayed. Anything whose value is tied to originality, where stone chips are not a cosmetic issue but a financial one. And new deliveries where the customer expects to take a photograph the moment it comes off the trailer.
Outside those cases, be honest with yourself about whether the extra cost buys anything real. A three-year-old German sedan will be perfectly fine in the open, and we will say so.
Book earlier than you would for open transport. There are fewer enclosed trailers on the road, and on quieter lanes it can take longer to place a load.

Enclosed rates typically run 40 to 60% above open transport on the same lane. If a quote comes in far below that spread, ask what equipment is actually being sent.

Is enclosed transport worth the extra cost?
It is if the vehicle has low ground clearance, original or fresh paint, genuine collector value, or is being delivered to a customer who expects it flawless. For a standard daily driver the premium usually buys peace of mind rather than measurable protection.
Will my car be strapped by the wheels or the chassis?
Soft nylon straps over the tyres are standard on enclosed loads. Chassis chains are avoided because they can mark suspension components and stress mounting points on lowered cars.
Can you move a non-running classic?
Yes, provided it rolls, steers and brakes. Tell us at quote stage so we assign a trailer with a winch and the right loading equipment rather than discovering the problem at the kerb.
How much clearance is too low for an open trailer?
Below roughly four inches we recommend enclosed with a lift gate. Splitters, side skirts and long front overhangs all reduce the effective clearance beyond what the spec sheet shows.
Do you carry more insurance on enclosed loads?
Enclosed carriers generally hold higher cargo limits than open trailers. We will email you the specific certificate for your assigned carrier before you commit.
How far ahead should I book?
Three to four weeks where possible. Enclosed capacity is thinner than open, and around auction weeks and show season it tightens further on the affected lanes.
